Debbie is so much fun to
have in class, she has so
much rhythm and soul, and
she has more smiles to give
than anyone I know.
Looking at her, you
would think she's got
everything under control
until she told me about
her brain cancer....
and you know what? I still
say she has everything
under control because
she has zest, appreciation
and love for life...
Thank you Ms. Debbie
for sharing your story......

Zumba / Brain Tumor???
My name is Debbie Neal and I am in Katherine “Kat” Davis Zumba Gold Class. It’s a Zumba class for seniors.
I had a seizure last June at work, and they had to rush me to the Hospital. Long story short. Brain Tumor…Astrocytoma Grade 2…malignant… Had “Toby” removed, (that’s right I named it, because life is short so may as well have some fun), anyway, I was home for 3 months and gained a whole lot of weight. Had nothing to do but eat….(God, I love food), anyway, when I went back to work in Sept of 09’ I was still consuming various amounts of food. I was on the “see food diet”…you know that one I’m sure… Went for my first MRI and it was clear, went back this July and it was still clear. See, a grade 2 Astrocytoma is usually prevalent in young adults, not old women. Fortunately I’m young at heart….so, I thought before I went for my MRI this time I was going to loose weight. That’s when I decided to join Weight Watchers and Zumba…. When I told my Dr. (I go to The City of Hope) that I was taking Zumba, he said to tell my instructor “THANK YOU and to give her a big hug” . When I asked him if I could do Zumba he gave me the thumbs up because he explained that exercise is extremely good for the brain. It gets all those endorphins going and also helps any numerous other malfunctions we get as we get older. I told him that “Kat” worked our booty’s off.
I don’t think I’ve been in this good of shape since the Roller Derby Days. Yep, that’s right, I used to roller skate at the Olympic auditorium from 1969 to 1979…could be that’s where I got “Toby”.
If you like to dance, exercise, are concerned about your weight, or just want to have fun and are of the Grey haired set, then trust me, you will absolutely love Zumba. You might not understand the words, but then who needs to. All you have to do is understand “music”, and shake what your mama gave you!
We are all going to miss Kat when she leaves us, but who knows, maybe she will pop in from time to time to lead us in a class….sure hope so! THANK YOU, KAT for helping me, or should I say US!!
